Minister Endorses Youth-Led Eco-Friendly Rice Initiative
Thailand's Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, Prof. Dr. Narumon Pinyosinwat, has endorsed the "Future of Good Life" project, a youth-led initiative aimed at promoting sustainable rice farming practices. The project focuses on developing low-carbon rice cultivation techniques to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally friendly agriculture.
A working group of students from Ruamrudee International School and Bangkok Patana School presented their efforts to the minister, highlighting innovative methods such as alternate wetting and drying (AWD). This technique significantly reduces methane emissions from rice paddies while improving yields. The initiative also advocates for carbon credit trading, providing an additional revenue stream for Thai farmers. The minister commended the students for their dedication to sustainable agriculture and their development of tools to measure and manage carbon emissions. She emphasized the government's commitment to fostering young agricultural innovators through programs like the Young Smart Farmer initiative, which aims to equip the next generation with skills and technology to navigate climate change challenges.
The "Future of Good Life" project has already seen tangible impacts, with initial participation from 40 farmers in Suphanburi covering 500 rai (80 hectares). This number has grown to 150 farmers spanning 2,000 rai (320 hectares), with plans for further expansion. The project's success exemplifies how youth-led innovation, supported by public-private partnerships, can drive meaningful change in Thailand’s agricultural landscape, ushering in a new era of sustainability and economic opportunity for local farmers.
