Thailand Increases Public Holidays in 2025 to Boost Tourism

The Thai government has announced the addition of three extra public holidays in 2025, aiming to stimulate domestic tourism and invigorate the national economy. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai revealed that these additional holidays are scheduled for Monday, June 2, and Monday, August 11, creating extended four-day weekends in conjunction with the Queen’s birthday on June 3 and Mother’s Day on August 12, respectively. Furthermore, Friday, January 2, 2026, has been declared a public holiday, resulting in a five-day New Year break from December 31, 2025, to January 4, 2026. This initiative increases the total number of public holidays in Thailand to 21 for the year 2025.

The decision aligns with the government's 'Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025' campaign, which seeks to promote tourism and sports activities nationwide. By introducing these long weekends, officials anticipate a surge in domestic travel, providing a much-needed boost to local businesses and the tourism sector, which contributes approximately 12% to Thailand's gross domestic product and employs nearly a fifth of the country's workforce. This strategy reflects ongoing efforts to revitalize the tourism industry following the global challenges faced in recent years.

Deputy government spokeswoman Sasikan Wattanachan emphasized that the additional holidays are part of a broader plan to designate 2025 as a year dedicated to tourism and sports. The government remains optimistic that these measures will encourage both domestic and international travelers to explore Thailand's diverse attractions, thereby fostering economic growth and cultural exchange throughout the country.
